Nationals Stadium Proposal 2007

My aluminum and neon light sculpture, Light Plays , tells a story of baseball. As a young boy my family immersed me in the world of the Milwaukee Braves. The baseball luminaries of my youth were Warren Spahn, Joe Torre, Eddie Mathews, and especially, my hero, Hank Aaron. My first and lasting impressions of baseball were formed by the atmosphere of those Braves' games and in particular, the explosive ability of Aaron. Through a young boy's eyes, stretches of routine play were punctuated by incredible moments of electricity that happened in the blink of an eye. There was no telling when fans would be ignited by double or even triple plays, by an unimaginable diving catch, or by the surprise of a stolen base. So too, the sharp crack of the bat, the long ball, and the home run could both startle and excite the senses as the game's course was altered in a matter of seconds. It is this essential, electrifying characteristic of baseball that has inspired my sculpture.
